About the event

ASL4Responders presented an introductory language-access training and live platform demonstration to members of the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.

Drawing on my experience as an EMT, I demonstrated how responders can use essential ASL and Spanish phrases to establish basic communication, identify immediate concerns, and help patients feel acknowledged while appropriate language services are arranged. Participants also explored how the ASL4Responders platform organizes its 100+ learning resources around the stages of a real patient encounter.

Training highlights

  • Recognizing communication barriers during emergency care

  • Introducing yourself and identifying a patient’s preferred language

  • Asking essential questions about pain, symptoms, medications, and allergies
